2025: New horizons for home distilling. Law changes and trends
Since its founding in 2014, the Hobby Distiller’s Association (HDA) has advocated for the legalization of home distilling. In 2025, the landscape is shifting: several U.S. states are reconsidering strict laws, and Europe is embracing hobbyist-friendly reforms.
1. U.S. Legal Updates
Texas & Colorado may legalize small-scale distilling (up to 100 liters/year for personal use).
Federal Bills: Congress is debating a «Home Distilling Act» similar to the 1978 Homebrew Act. HDA is pushing for its passage.
Caution: Even in progressive states, selling unlicensed spirits remains illegal.
2. Global Trends
Europe: Germany and the Czech Republic now allow distilling up to 50 liters/year. The UK is reviewing similar reforms.
Tech Innovations: Smart stills like StillSmart 2025 (with temperature controls) make home distilling safer and more precise.
3. HDA’s Advice
Always check local laws – e.g., home distilling is still a felony in California.
Never sell homemade spirits – this is the #1 reason for legal crackdowns.
